Protected Driver cover: what does this essential cover entail?

Conducteur protégé in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, car insurance is compulsory to drive legally. However, many drivers are unaware that, in the event of an accident for which they are at fault, their own injuries are not automatically covered by third-party liability insurance alone. This is precisely where ‘driver protection’ cover comes into play.

This cover, often offered as an optional extra in a car insurance policy, provides compensation to the driver if they are injured in an accident, even if they are at fault.

What is the ‘Protected Driver’ cover?

The ‘Protected Driver’ cover is designed to compensate the driver of the insured vehicle if they suffer bodily injury as a result of a road traffic accident.

Unlike auto third-party liability cover, which compensates third-party victims, this cover directly protects the person behind the wheel. It can therefore apply if you are responsible for the accident, if no third party is identified, or if you are the only person involved.

You are covered, just like all other drivers named in the policy, during all your journeys in the event of disability or injury, whether you are a driver, cyclist, scooter rider or public transport user.

In practice, it may cover:

  • non-reimbursed medical expenses,

  • loss of income in the event of incapacity to work,

  • permanent disability,

  • pain and suffering or cosmetic damage, depending on the policy,

  • a lump sum paid to relatives in the event of death.

Why is this cover important?

Luxembourg has heavy road traffic, particularly due to the large number of cross-border commuters travelling daily between the Grand Duchy, France, Belgium and Germany. Traffic jams, daily commutes, slippery roads in winter and urban traffic naturally increase the risk of accidents.

Even a low-speed collision can result, for example, in:

  • a sprained neck,

  • prolonged sick leave,

  • rehabilitation,

  • temporary loss of mobility.

Without driver cover, the financial impact can be significant.

What should you check before choosing this cover?

Not all driver cover policies are the same. Before taking out a policy, it is advisable to compare several factors.

  • The compensation limit: a high limit offers better protection in the event of serious injuries.

  • Exclusions: certain cases may be excluded: drink-driving, lack of a valid licence, wilful misconduct, etc.

  • Any excess: check whether an excess applies before compensation is paid.

Driver protection cover: a form of cover that is often underestimated

Adding driver protection cover is therefore a smart way to supplement your car insurance. At Foyer, this option is available across the various car insurance packages, with several levels of cover tailored to the driver’s needs.

In Luxembourg, where the car remains central to daily travel, this cover is highly recommended. A well-structured policy not only protects your vehicle: it also protects the person most at risk – the driver.
