Since 1 January 2026, drivers insured in Luxembourg can present their motor insurance certificate directly in digital format. The paper version, which had long been mandatory to keep in the vehicle, is no longer required during a roadside check, provided that a valid, legible and up-to-date certificate can be shown.

This change is part of the gradual digitalisation of administrative procedures in Luxembourg and aims to make everyday life easier for motorists.

Who is concerned?

All drivers of vehicles insured and registered in Luxembourg are concerned, without exception. This includes residents, cross-border workers, as well as occasional drivers using a vehicle insured in Luxembourg.

In practice, as soon as the insurance policy is issued in Luxembourg, the insurance certificate may be presented in digital form during a roadside check.

Which formats are accepted?

Luxembourg legislation does not impose any specific electronic format. The insurance certificate may therefore be presented in various digital forms, such as a PDF received by email, a document available via the insurer’s online customer portal, or a clear photo of the paper certificate.

The key requirement is that the document must be easy to access, quickly readable by the authorities, and available even without an internet connection.

Good habits to adopt

Before setting off, it is advisable to check that the certificate stored on your smartphone is up to date, especially after a change of vehicle or licence plate. Occasional drivers should also be informed where the digital document is stored.

Keeping a digital copy in a secure online storage space can also help avoid difficulties in the event of loss or a smartphone malfunction.

Car insurance remains essential

While the format of the certificate is changing, the importance of having appropriate car insurance coverage remains the same. Third-party liability insurance is still mandatory, and additional cover options can further strengthen your protection depending on how you use your vehicle.

At Foyer, motor insurance offers flexible solutions that adapt to your mobility needs, in Luxembourg and abroad, while naturally integrating digital document management.

In summary

The end of the obligation to carry a paper insurance certificate in the car is a practical step forward for motorists. By adopting a few simple habits, the digital motor insurance certificate allows you to stay compliant while benefiting from more convenient and modern procedures.
