Driving safely is a priority for all drivers, and that means not only acting carefully on the road, but also complying with legal requirements in terms of safety equipment. In Luxembourg, your vehicle must contain certain items. Find out everything you need to know to drive safely and legally.

Which mandatory equipment should you have in your vehicle?
In the Grand Duchy, the law requires certain essential items to be in every vehicle, whether it's a private car, a commercial vehicle or a company vehicle.
Reflective safety vest
It is compulsory to have a high-vis safety jacket complying with standard EN 20471. It must be accessible from the passenger compartment, i.e. you must be able to put it on without leaving the vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident. It must be visible to other road users, particularly in low light conditions or on a poorly lit road.
ℹ︎ Note: it is recommended that you have a vest for each passenger, although the law only requires one.
The warning triangle
Another essential piece of equipment: the warning triangle. It must be placed at a sufficient distance from the vehicle in the event of an emergency stop in order to warn other drivers. It is essential for preventing secondary collisions in the event of a breakdown or accident.
Fire extinguisher (for commercial vehicles)
Commercial or professional vehicles are also required to have a fire extinguisher. Although it is not compulsory for private cars, it can be very useful in the event of a fire.
Car seats for children
Children under the age of 3 must travel in a car seat adapted to their age or height. Children under 1.50 m must be placed in a car seat or booster seat that meets the following standards:
ECE-R44 standard or
ECE R129 standard
In Luxembourg, the law provides for a fine of €145 and the withdrawal of 2 points for transporting a child under 1.50 m without an approved special restraint system.
ℹ︎ Caution: a seat with the child's back to the road is forbidden on a front passenger seat fitted with an airbag unless the airbag is disconnected.
Recommended but not compulsory equipment
Although not required by Luxembourg law, certain items of equipment can prove invaluable in the event of an unforeseen event:
First aid kit: this must contain basic items to provide first aid in the event of a minor injury.
Starter cables: to prevent battery failure and immobilisation.
Spare lightbulbs
Ice scraper: essential in winter.
Spare wheel, compressor or repair kit: to continue your journey in the event of a puncture.
Survival blanket: useful if you have to wait on the side of the road for long periods.
Torch: essential in the event of a night-time breakdown.
What are the risks of non-compliance?
In the event of a roadside check or accident, the absence of compulsory equipment can result in an administrative fine. What's more, this can have repercussions on your compensation in the event of an accident, especially if the lack of equipment has made the situation worse.
What are the emergency numbers in Luxembourg?
Depending on the situation, call the emergency services on 112 or 113 (police). Never stay in your vehicle on the side of the road, even in bad weather.
