Whether it's travelling to work, taking your children to school, doing your shopping or enjoying your pastimes, our daily journeys are many and varied. In Luxembourg, where mobility is central to professional and family life, it is essential to insure them properly.

In this article, we take a closer look at legal obligations, best practices in insurance and the solutions available to ensure that your journeys are safe and stress-free.

  1. Car insurance: a legal requirement in Luxembourg

Cars remain the preferred means of transport in the Grand Duchy, particularly for commuting between home and work. In Luxembourg, motor vehicle liability insurance (RC Auto) is compulsory for all motorised vehicles. It covers material damage and bodily injury caused to third parties in the event of an accident.

Why go beyond compulsory liability insurance?

Third-party liability insurance does not cover your own property damage or injuries in the event of an accident for which you are responsible. For optimal protection, it is advisable to add additional cover:

  • Partial comprehensive insurance: covers theft, fire, broken windows, natural disasters or collisions with animals.

  • Comprehensive insurance (all damages): also includes damage to your own vehicle, even in the event of an accident for which you are responsible.

  • Driver protection is essential, as the driver is the only person who is not compensated for their own damages in the event of an accident. This cover protects you (and all other drivers named in the policy) on all your journeys in the event of injury or disability, whether you are driving your car, riding a bicycle or scooter, or using public transport.

💡 At Foyer, the mobilé package allows you to tailor your cover to your needs, whether you drive a lot, have a new vehicle or are looking for value for money above all else.

2. Cycling: liability and personal protection

With the development of cycle paths and free public transport, many residents and cross-border workers are opting to cycle on a daily basis. But did you know that a cycling accident can make you liable?

Personal civil liability insurance

In Luxembourg, personal civil liability insurance covers damage you may cause to others when riding a bicycle. This is essential protection for the whole family, particularly useful for children.

Electric bikes with a maximum speed of 25 km/h do not require specific insurance: civil liability insurance is sufficient.

💡 If you have a mozaïk home insurance policy civil liability might already be included!

3. Electric scooters and other

Motorised personal mobility devices such as electric scooters are also covered by civil liability insurance:

  • Scooters limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h are treated as bicycles and do not require motor vehicle civil liability insurance, but it is strongly recommended that you check that your civil liability insurance covers them.

  • Scooters exceeding this speed are considered motor vehicles and require compulsory motor vehicle civil liability insurance.

4. Public transport and multimodal journeys

Luxembourg is the first country in the world to have made public transport (train, bus, tram) free of charge. This development is encouraging more and more residents to combine several modes of transport in their daily lives.

Even though passengers are generally covered by the carrier's liability in the event of an accident, it is a good idea to have personal insurance to:

  • benefit from individual protection when travelling,

  • cover your personal belongings (computer, smartphone) in the event of theft or damage.

With Foyer, you benefit from flexible and scalable solutions that support you in all your mobility needs.
