Extreme rainfall, flooding, storms and droughts are becoming increasingly frequent, including in Luxembourg. These climate hazards can cause considerable damage to your home. In light of these growing risks, it is essential to know how your home insurance protects you in the event of a natural disaster.

What is considered a weather hazard or natural disaster?

A climate hazard refers to an exceptional weather event that is likely to cause material damage or human injury:

  • floods,

  • mudslides,

  • storms and gusts of wind,

  • hail or heavy snow,

  • prolonged periods of drought,

  • landslides.

When a climatic event exceeds normal intensity and causes large-scale damage, it may be recognised as a natural disaster. Unlike a localised storm, a natural disaster is generally declared by the authorities.

Does home insurance cover natural disasters?

As a general rule, home insurance policies in Luxembourg include coverage for certain weather events, but the coverage varies depending on the insurer. It is therefore crucial to check your policy carefully.

Coverage against natural disasters may include:

  • damage to buildings (walls, roofs, windows),

  • damage to personal property (furniture, appliances, personal belongings),

  • clean-up, pumping or emergency accommodation costs.

Please note: certain situations may not be systematically covered. For example, water infiltration due to lack of building maintenance. Remember to carry out a few checks each season.

At Foyer Lux-Assurances, we help you choose comprehensive home insurance that effectively protects your home and your belongings.

Furthermore, in order to be compensated, it is important to file a claim within the specified time frame.

A changing climate... and changing needs

Climate change is making extreme events more frequent and more intense, even in regions that have been relatively unaffected until now, such as Luxembourg. For example, the floods of July 2021 affected thousands of households in Luxembourg, causing millions of euros in damage.

In this context, adequate cover is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Check your policy regularly and adjust it according to changes in your situation: location, value of property, work carried out, etc.

Our advice for effective protection:

  • Accurately assess the value of your belongings to be insured.

  • Store your valuables in a safe place, especially if there is a risk of flooding.

  • Carry out regular maintenance on your roof, gutters and pipes.

  • Check the terms of your contract with your Foyer Lux-Assurances advisor.

  • Consider extending your ‘Natural Disasters’ cover if your home is exposed to specific risks.
